create · connect
I enjoy creating ceramics that are inspired by the sensitivity of the clay, perform a specific function, and are finely designed. There is a wonderful challenge in creating a beautifully made form with a surface that enhances the shape. I strive to make pieces that are not only fine craft but, when functional, feel palpable in the hand. Whether a piece becomes part of someone’s daily ritual or plays a role in a special occasion, my artistic goal is realized when it serves as more than just a vessel, but to enhance a life experience. This connection between utility, design and human interaction is at the heart of my work.
“My love of the ceramic medium drives me to not only make my own work, but to share knowledge and connect others through this artform.”
Karen is a ceramic artist and instructor located in the Charleston, SC area. While earning a BFA in Graphic Design from Marshall University, she discovered ceramics. Karen lived in several states, working in design, sales, and management, then found her way back to clay and began advanced studies at the same university.
Growing up in the mountains of Western Maryland and West Virginia, she learned from her artistic family the value of fine craft. Throughout her 30+ year love affair with clay, she has continued to gain ceramic knowledge by attending demonstrations and many hands-on workshops, working alongside many ceramic masters. Karen has taught at Art Students League of Denver, Parker School of the Arts and has shown her work in many states.
Making functional and decorative ceramics as "Full Circle Studios,” Karen was an active member of the Colorado Potters Guild and Parker Artist Guild while living in Colorado. After moving to South Carolina, she is currently focused on ceramic instruction and continues to make ceramics inspired by function and design.
She teaches classes, workshops and private lessons at Studio Union in Charleston, SC. She believes there is great value in the experience of learning, creating and connecting with others.
